Rationale
Rationale
In this
examination of inequality, I wanted to shed light on rising rent and house
prices forcing families with children to live in subpar homes like cars. The
slogan of “There’s no place like home” tempts the reader with warmth and
familiarity, sadly juxtaposed against the depressing images of children living
in cars.
This poster
is an appeal to the observer’s wehi or pathos. Through the use of bleak colours
and a nod to John Bauer’s illustration style, I wanted to evoke a feeling of
coldness, dampness, and generally down and out feelings.
In the
second poster, the text and illustration is laid over a crumpled piece of paper
symbolising a throwaway issue, or throwaway people. A bright background makes the poster
eye-catching, while the small car cowering in the bottom of the page reinforces
the feeling of insignificance of the car-dwellers, and elicits pity from the
viewer.
