Week 3: Monday - Interim Presentation

Image
31.07.17 INTERIM PRESENTATION Critique Today was our interim presentation, I presented the 4 concepts that I thought represented my issue best.  In my feedback it appears people could see the issue I was dealing with which was good. I got some helpful suggestions about how to further develop my concepts. This session was very helpful, from here I can identify which concept to develop further and which maybe arnt as strong.

Week 2, Thursday

27.07.17 CONCEPTS During todays class we went through the concepts we did at home with ideation exercises, we did a small table critique with everyone verbalising their ideas. I voiced my concerns around my idea to Caroline and she agreed that focussing more on accommodation crisis with emphasis on people living in cars is better as its more specific. My refined idea is now children being forced to live in cars because of the housing crisis in NZ. I have now revisited my concepts and further developed a few ideas around it.

CHANGE OF ISSUE Understand/Define/Ideate/Making My idea has changed alittle - more focussing on the housing crisis/accomodation crisis and people being forced to live in their cars. I cant find any actual statistics from the last two years. The best I can find is from a 2015 article which cites a salvation army survey stating that 568 children are living in cars/garages/campervans and motels. http://www.interest.co.nz/news/78708/salvation-army-survey-finds-568-children-living-cars-garages-campervans-and-motels This information is from childpoverty.co.nz, it doesnt have definite stats about children living in cars.

Week Two, Monday 24th July

IDEATION TECHNIQUES Ideate/making/brainstorming In class we went through some ideation techniques that can be helpful for idea generation. The words I got were RED & DRAGON. These concepts are in my workbook. they were helpful exercises but im not sure about my idea now... Phrase: Whats good for the goose is good for the gander As independent study I did further ideation with the same words and phrases. Im finding my issue still quite broad and Im thinking of pivoting my idea.

HOUSING CRISIS Understand, define, ideate After sessions in class and brainstorming there was an abundance of potential ideas. The topic for my inquality poster is housing --> housing crisis --> lack of housing --> property speculators buying property and treating them as their main income. In 2016 housing prices rised the fastest they had in 12 years. Also in the 2016 report, The Inequality Paradox:  Why Inequality Matters Even Though It Has Barely Changed. They dubunked myths about inequality and misperceptions of the public. “Inequality in incomes has been flat for decades. The housing crisis has caused real inequities, and real inequalities in lived experience, and real hardship. Trying to solve a housing problem by focusing on income levels simply will not work.” One Kiwi in five is in poverty even before you start looking at  housing  costs, says anti-poverty campaigner Max Rashbrooke. CITIZEN DESIGNER Understand, define Lecture: In the lecture we looked at the designer being a voice for change. We look at several different examples of this. One that I found interesting was the John Heartfield example of "Adolf the Superman", I had previously been looking into him while looking at the dadaists and their use of symbolism and juxtaposition to create meaning. Untitled “Your body is a battleground” (1989) Barbara Kruger Linder Sterling, 1976 During the lecture we looked at posters that deal with human rights and one of the examples was the Barbara Kruger poster. In seeing this I was instantly reminded of the Linder Sterling piece at the bottom, I think because of the contrast of colours - the composition and the black and white women. During class we played pictionary with the table. It was a good exercise because it honed the quick word/image associations  - whilst under a time pressure.

Introduction to paper Understand Lecture: This week was the introduction to the paper, in our lecture we looked at the concepts of ihi and wehi. The concepts are associated with how a piece of work makes you feel and how you understand the work. Wehi is more the emotional response to a work, and the ihi is the how the designer has achieved this, that is how they have used visual rhetoric to communicate an idea. Rhetoric is the art of persuasion in pursuit of a desired outcome. It provides the theoretical basis for the communication theory we use in any situation that involves influencing someone to do something that they may initially resist or disregard. Pathos – an appeal to the emotions, which might make you laugh, cry or recoil in horror. Logos – a persuasive argument that you accept for its logical conclusions Ethos – a means of convincing someone by the character or credibility of the persuader Class: During class on monday had sets of images that we were discussin...
